A Mother’s Love

, Oil on Linen, 18 x 18, sold

I started drawing the human figure when I was very young. In fact it was the subject that I focused on until I decided in the late 1960s to switch my focus to nature. My knowledge of human anatomy came in very handy when I started a clothing business in the early 80s and needed to constantly sketch the human body wearing clothing. Living in the Southwest has allowed me to study the people and their magnificent textiles so full of artistry. I try to capture not only their faces but their movement, showing the texture of the cloth through brushwork and color. When doing portrait commissions I want to portray the personality of the individual. Once again, eyes are so important.
